Mystikal’s Request For Parole Denied, Set To Release Low Battery Next Year

Three years after releasing his smash album Tarantula, Louisiana rapper Mystikal was hauled off to Louisiana State Prison.

The bid stemmed from a 2004 incident in which he demanded sexual acts from his hairstylist after accusing her of stealing $80,000 in checks.

A recent bid for parole, which would cut his 6 year sentence down to 4, was shot down by the Louisiana parole board.

Despite the rejection, Mystikal still has his chin up.

“Mystikal is in great spirits, despite the parole boards decision not to release him,” a source told All Hip Hop.

“He’s been writing and focused on his career once he is finally released.”

Hoping for the same success as 2001’s Tarantula, Mystikal plans on having his 7th album, entitled Low Battery, in stores early this year.

Jury Selection In Remy Ma Assault Case To Kick Off Next Week

The jury selection process in Remy Ma’s assault and witness tampering case will kick off next week.

As reported earlier, Remy is accused of shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the abdomen inside a car after they both left a Manhattan nightspot in July 2007.

Remy was initially charged with attempted murder but prosecutors would drop the charges to assault after evidence revealed that the gun went off accidentally.

The Bronx bred rapper is free on $250,000 bond.

The witness tampering charges stem from an August 2007 attack on the boyfriend of a witness at a Bronx nightclub which prosecutors claim Remy orchestrated with the help of her male friends.

According to USA Today, a Manhattan judge February 28 scheduled March 6th as the beginning date for jury selection in the case.

Remy, who has denied the charges, could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Ja Rule Puts Home Up For Co-Defendants Bail

Ja Rule catches the ire of a New York State Supreme Court Judge after the rapper put up thousands of dollars to bail out two co-defendants in his gun possession case.

According to Associated Press, “Justice Micki Scherer feels that the rapper has put himself in the position of perhaps controlling the outcome of the case”.

When asked the Judge said “I think the potential for it is a big problem”.

The case dates back following a Lil Wayne concert at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan.

After being pulled over by the NYPD, officers discovered a .40 caliber handgun, and arrested Rule along with both of his friends, Mohamad Gamal, and Dennis Cherry.

Ja had to put up his Saddle River, NJ mansion to make up for their combined bail of $320,000.

His attorney, Stacey Richman, told the court that the defense would try to come up with separate bail packages for the other two men.

The Judge is expected to rule next month on the prosecutor’s request for DNA samples for the defendants.

Judge Sides W/ Diddy In Assault Case

It’s too soon to decide whether or not hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs will have to turn over his financial information, said the judge presiding over his assault case yesterday (Feb. 27).

Diddy is accused of punching a man in the face outside a Hollywood hotel back in February of 2007.

Michael M. Marzban, lawyer of the alleged victim Gerard Rechnitzer, wanted to get into Diddy’s financial records in order to seek punitive damages if his client wins the case, according to the Associated Press.

Combs filed a declaration opposing the efforts to obtain information on his financial worth but the judge said it’s too early to dig into the rapper’s personal affairs anyway.

“If you were to get a finding of fraud, oppression or malice, some or all of this information you would be entitled to,” Superior Court Judge Robert L. Hess said. “I’m not persuaded at this point to give it to you today. We have privacy issues here that are very important.”

As previously reported, Diddy was investigated for allegedly assaulting Rechnitzer outside Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel. Rechnitzer claimed the altercation started after Diddy tried to invite his fiancé to a private party. Combs was cleared of criminal charges in July, but Rechnitzer filed a civil suit last March.

Combs said it didn’t happen that way.

“Any contact … was caused by his forward motion against my open hand,” Diddy declared in his court certification.

“People do not bounce off hands with their face/body, they get punched,” Marzban said in a written response. His client also has four eye witnesses to back up his claims.

The trial date is set for May 27.

Don Diva Delivers Dave Mays And Benzino Cease & Desist

After finding success in branding Hip-Hop Weekly to newstand readers, former Source magazine publisher David Mays and longtime business partner, artist and friend Raymond “Benzino” Scott have opted to launch an urban mens’ lifestyle magazine in Monsta. The first issue released earlier this month.

The New Jersey-based magazine received a cease-and-desist letter yesterday from Don Diva editor Robert G. Lopez. In addition to his duties at Don Diva, Lopez contributes to Ozone and other publications.

Lopez’ reasoning lies in his copyright retention and trademark “Monsta,” “Monsta News,” and “Monsta: The Global Ghetto News Report” are his, which has been violated by the fledging publication.

Mays and Benzino have yet to comment, though documents verify that the party’s law firm was served with papers earlier this week.

The Lox Prep New Album, Live, Suffer & Celebrate

The last time fans heard an album from the Lox, Diddy was still Puffy, and the shiny suits were still popular.

For a long time, no one really thought that their would ever be another Lox album at least not under the name LOX. The last time Jada , Styles, and Louch put out a group effort it was 2000 with the album “We Are The Streets”. But in a recent Interview with Yo! Raps, Sheek had some good news, about the crew. As well as his own solo career.

“Yeah tell them asap man it’s called “Live, Suffer & Celebrate”. We got a lot of songs done we keep recording we going in strong.

We all know The Lox are great MC’s and have plenty of material recorder and man I know it’s going to be hard to make that final tracklisting, it’s D-Block ya’ll!” said Louch.

Louch also has his solo effort on the way and according to him, it’s ready to go. The name of the album, tentatively titled “Silverback Gorilla,” will be released through Koch records.

The First single will be “Good Love,” produced by Red Spyda. “Silverback Gorilla” will feature cameos from Jadakiss, Styles P, Bun B, Jim Jones, The Game as well as many more.

Bumpy Johnson’s Widow Releases Tell-All Book, Calls Frank Lucas A Liar

Mayme Johnson, the widow of infamous Harlem gangster Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson has written a book on her late husband, offering a glimpse into his storied life.

Aiming to clear up the many misconceptions of Bumpy, Harlem Godfather: The Rap on my Husband, Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, is a collaborative effort between the 93 year-old Johnson and best selling author, Karen E. Quinones Miller.

The book gives detailed accounts on many of the personal aspects of Johnson including his upbringing in Charleston, S.C., his migration to Harlem as a teenager, his rise to Harlem crime boss, his much hyped gang war with mobster Dutch Schultz and his death in 1968 at the Harlem eatery, Wells Restaurant.

“Most of the information that people think they know about Bumpy is wrong,” said Mrs. Johnson via a statement. “That’s because he never used to give interviews, so the newspapers and magazine back in the thirties and forties just made up stuff. And later on it got repeated so often people just took it for the truth. I never got upset because I knew that people just didn’t know better.”

A particular aspect the Mrs. Johnson hopes to clear up is the nature of the relationship between Bumpy Johnson and Frank Lucas, who has long claimed to have been the protégé of Johnson.

While Mrs. Johnson believes some things were misconstrued because people were simply ignorant to the facts, she contends that Lucas deliberately falsified accounts of their dealings together, even concerning Bumpy’s death.

“There’s a difference between being wrong and lying, and what Frank Lucas did was lie,” she said. “I understand it was probably to give himself some street credibility because he snitched and Bumpy never did, but Frank still shouldn’t have lied. Frank even went and told those Hollywood people that Bumpy died in his arms. Frank wasn’t nowhere around when Bumpy died.”

The book also gives accounts of the late gangster’s social life, including rubbing elbows with the likes of Billie Holiday, Sugar Ray Robinson, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and Lena Horne, among others.

Lil’ Wayne Inks Jae Millz To Young Money

Lil’ Wayne has signed Harlem rapper Jae Millz to his Young Money Entertainment imprint, with a new remix set to hit radio in weeks.

Weezy recently made the announcement during a concert to a packed house in Newark NJ.

Millz confirmed the deal to Complex magazine.

“Yeah, we just drawing up the paperwork, but I’ve been rocking with [Lil Wayne] since the first week in 2008,” the rapper said via a text message. “I’ve just been keeping stuff low, but Young Money is what it is, and I’m still Wanna Blow. The ‘Holla At A Playa Remix’ is going to be out in two weeks. We’re moving, Young Moola Baby!”

In this week’s Hip-Hop and R&B charts Jay-Z hits the platinum mark, Alicia Keys and Amy Winehouse trade places, Mary J. Blige hold tight to the Top 10 and Dipset’s Jim Jones debuts in the Top 20.

Alicia Keys may have been edged out by Amy Winehouse last week, but she climbs back to the No. 2 spot with 53,100 copies sold of As I Am in the past week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. After 15 weeks, Keys continues to dominate to the tune of 3,149,600 albums sold.

British crooner Amy Winehouse continues her post-Grammy sales surge, sliding one spot to No. 3 with 51,500 copies sold of her debut album, Back to Black. After 50 weeks on the charts, Winehouse has scanned 1,700,700 discs.

Mary J. Blige holds onto her No. 9 spot this week, selling 34,900 copies of her eighth album, Growing Pains. Ten weeks in, the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul has sold 1,260,500 albums.

Keyshia Cole climbs six spots to No. 12 this week, pushing 29,900 copies of her sophomore effort, Just Like You. After 22 weeks, Cole has scanned 1,198,800 discs.

Right behind Cole is teen phenom Chris Brown, who lingers at No. 13 this week with his second album, Exclusive. After scanning 29,400 discs this week, Brown has amassed a sales total of 1,317,300.

Dipset rapper Jim Jones debuts at No. 19 this week with Harlem’s American Gangster, a not-so-subtle reference to Jay-Z’s concept album, American Gangster, which finally went platinum after 16 weeks on the charts. In week one, Jones’ album sold 24,900 copies.

Next up is Chi-town rapper Lupe Fiasco, who lands at No. 30 with his second album, Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool, which sold 19,500 copies this week. After 10 weeks, Lu has sold 358,900 copies.

In a continuing theme, Fergie continues to reign after 75 weeks on the charts. The Black Eyed Pea singer and solo star dropped two spots to No. 33 this week, scanning 18,700 copies of The Dutchess for a total of 3,468,600 albums sold.

Def Jam hitmaker The-Dream climbs 10 spots to No. 36 this week with his debut album Love/Hate, which sold 18,400 copies in the last seven days. The songwriter behind Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella” has sold 244,500 copies after 11 weeks.

Speaking of Rihanna, the Good Girl Gone Bad drops three spots to No. 38 this week with 17,600 in sales. After 38 weeks, Rihanna’s totals stand at 1,077,900.

Soulja Boy climbs nine spots to re-enter the Top 50, landing at No. 47 with his debut album, Souljaboytellem.com. Rap’s very own Teen of da South cranked out 15,600 albums this week, for a 21-week total of 799,400 sold.

R&B crooner J. Holiday, who was arrested for drug possession this week, climbs two spots to No. 49 with 15,500 copies sold of his debut, Back of My ‘Lac. After 21 weeks, Holiday has scanned 539,900 discs.

Def Jam hitmaker The-Dream climbs 10 spots to No. 36 this week with his debut album Love/Hate, which sold 18,400 copies in the last seven days. The songwriter behind Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella” has sold 244,500 copies after 11 weeks.

Speaking of Rihanna, the Good Girl Gone Bad drops three spots to No. 38 this week with 17,600 in sales. After 38 weeks, Rihanna’s totals stand at 1,077,900.

Soulja Boy climbs nine spots to re-enter the Top 50, landing at No. 47 with his debut album, Souljaboytellem.com. Rap’s very own Teen of da South cranked out 15,600 albums this week, for a 21-week total of 799,400 sold.

R&B crooner J. Holiday, who was arrested for drug possession this week, climbs two spots to No. 49 with 15,500 copies sold of his debut, Back of My ‘Lac. After 21 weeks, Holiday has scanned 539,900 discs.
